Install thumbnails on PSD files for Windows Explorer
As you know, in each Windows XP folder there are menu options such as view Large Thumbnails, Overview, Details, etc...
So in order to see our pictures as thumbnails, we use the option "show large thumbnails", of course.
In order to see thumbnails, I simply wrote and used this little program in Windows XP: PSD_Thumb.cmd (free)
Action thumbs for PSE4
Download this PSD file (free).
Create a new folder in the Previews\effects\ folder, eg. All What I Need
Move the Actions and the PSD file into the All What I Need folder.
Double click the "thumbs.psd" file.
Delete layers that you don't need.
Close Photoshop Elements, (Save).
Delete your cache. (see last picture, "item no 1")
Run Photoshop Elements, and open the Effects menu (toggle key = F7).
Other Stuff
|
This page is about actions (ATN files) and other stuff. A mouse click on the "Buy Now button", would open a page where you can pay $22. After submitting, a download page would open with all the stuff that is described below. Everything is tested on Windows XP. Use the below program "OpenFolder" to install your ATN files. |
|
Code Snip:![]() Running:
|
item no. 1A little program that you could have on your desktop, or in the programs folder. It is asking about a number 1...7, (* exit). Use it to open your Photoshop folders. Last part of code line no. 2, (see screen shot) (set v=*& set n=*) If you have different versions of psE or/and maybe psCS, leave it as is, but if you have only one version, e.g. psE5 (or whatever), you could modify line number two, e.g.: set v=5 for psE 5Since a folder isn't named Cache in psE5, ps7 or psCS, but two DB3 files are in the 5.0 folder, that folder is opened on option number three (psE5). Option no. 7 have only been tested in psE5. OpenFolder.cmd (free) |
|
item no. 2Besides showing the centre of your doc, which is the main function, this action also shows you where the golden lines are. They are calculated by the well known At least since the Renaissance, many artists and architects have proportioned their works to approximate the golden ratio. Centrepoint.atn (free) |
|
item no. 3Use this action to enhance and improve your photos. Curves.atn (free) |

item no. 4When we sharpen an image we could use the well known non-destructive technique with the Hi-Pass filter in blendmode Hardlight. Another often used technique is the Selective Sharpen one. Those two techniques can be combined of course. The below ATN file puts the edges on a layer. It does not sharpen, only adds a layer with the edges. So it could be used for other things than sharpness. If you do a sharpen on that layer, blank areas would get less sharpness, i.e. it should sharpen image noise less than objects. Edges.atn (free) |

item no. 5Crop a photo, ratio X to 1.23, (paper is 25 x 20.3 cm, and 250/203 = 1.23) The crop tool options are "No Restriction", "Use Photo Ratio", and e.g. "2.5 x 2 in". Some are repeated, so the 5 preset by Adobe are: 5 5 in (1.00)This is useless because we only need ratio 1.23 for a standard print on Kodak paper. Anyhow, a preset value can be overwriten for custom use, but the possible Adobe record actions are defective, so an action for this job could only be constructed semi-automatically. Usage: Run the Action named "EscCropNo" (named because of the three steps below:) 1: Press Esc (Cancel Crop). 2: Crop (Drag a window from upper left outside canvas to bottom). 3: Select "No Restriction" The crop tool would wait for your Enter key, but it's very important that you select the "No Restriction" before Enter, and that you follow the three and illogical steps, when you're not sure whether the image has ratio 1.5 Tips: If you press F8 and then Ctrl+A, you can see the new ratio 1.23, like this: W / H = 1.23 EscCropNo.atn (free) |

item no. 6Fun for kids. FireText.atn (free) |
|
item no. 7Tips: For photos that only need a bit contrast, merge the top layers down (Ctrl+E) and then lower the opacity. HighContrast.atn (free) |
| no pict |
item no. 8It only duplicates your image in LAB mode without making any adjustments. The user can decide what to do, and then with mouse + Shift, drag it over to the source image that was duplicated. Tips: The levels (Ctrl+L) would have other options than R G B such as channel A, B, and Lightness. Tips: Try Channel A and B in levels, e.g. 55 1 200 instead of 0 1 255, etc... Lab.atn (free) |
![]() LowerContrast repeated twice. Mask (item no 10) used on her hair and a bit on the left cow |
item no. 9Useful for photos that were shot in too much sunshine, or overexposed. LowerContrast.atn (free) |
|
item no. 10Like 32 bit, etc... the mask thing was also something that Adobe forgot in Elements. Put black on a layer mask to hide the layer. White to reveal. This is useful when you want something from a layer, and some other pixels from a layer below... Mask Tips: (toggle) Show as completely white: Shift click a mask. Show as completely black: Close the layer's eye. Show mask: Alt Click the mask. What mask: Alt+Shift Click the mask. Mask.atn (free) |
Old screen-shot

item no. 11This program can be used to compare e.g. two CDs or DVDs, (a CD and a local folder) or any two folders. To figure out why/where they are not identical, when we expect them to be 100%, with the same content, just double click this file. This is useful when we burned a bad cd/dvd, or if you just want to know if two folders are identical...

item no. 12A new option "N", now allow converting 16 to 8 bit PSD files. That's useful if you have created PSD files from RAW sources, but they become 16 bit PSD files in 25 GB each, but you only need 8 bit PSD files about 14 GB. Also included in this update: Destination JPG files can be made from both 8 and 16 bit source files. In other words: Select your source folder with e.g. RAW, and other 8 or 16 bit files, and the new destination files in JPG would all be created. Even if the source folder contain a mix of both 8 and 16 bit files, it's not a problem. In general Let's say that we have 80 JPEG files in the folder "E:\Photos\" and now we would like to have 80 PSD files in "E:\Photos\new\". The "Process Multiple Files" would make the 80 new PSD files, but they would all be Flatten :( That's not the way we should work! We want our adjustments made on separate layers, obviously :). The new options, e.g. "B" (see lower image) would construct all the 80 PSD files with the Background layer duplicated initially. (aberrations for PSE ver 3 or less).

item no. 13This action would copy and paste the inversed RGB channel into the mask channel. Tips: To invert it, just left click the mask, and then press Ctrl+i. High Pass Mask.atn (free) |

Notice about the other (below item no. 15) that most light red, (255 254 254)
became pure white, and most dark red, (1 0 0) became red (128 0 0). All other reds became red (255 0 0). Gray 1 1 1 (almost black) became gray 128, (any other gray became white 255) |
item no. 14An exact PSD file with a handmade gradient; useful for testing Blendmodes, Effects, Actions, etc. Details Black Gray White. 256 values: Width = 2px each, (1px for 0 127 255). Six main colors, 509 values each, 3054 values: Width = 1px each. Each row is 10 px high, so the entire image (70 px high), has only 10 px that is completely black (upper left corner). Tips Try once: Turn on your Grid; 1 px, 1 subdivision and press F8 key for pixel information. Pick up your pipette (key = i), and Zoom in about 1200 %. The Centrepoint Action (item no. 2) used on this PSD file, would match the vertical center line in pure "Gray 128", and "Red 255 0 0" (FF0000 hex), and so on... Gradients.psd (free) |

While I constructed and tested "THE Actions" (B Filter 00, and FF.atn), the image/layer below, showed up in the process, like this: ![]()
|
item no. 15Two small actions that were first developed for the FBI to reveal hidden blood on crime shots. I mostly use it for great improvments (kidding). Sure is that it improves lots of photos. To test what it can do, just execute one of the two actions/filters. Both actions would leave behind one hidden layer (e.g left image, gradient test), that you might turn on, delete, or whatever... Tips: Have fun, or experiment... Tut (free) B Filter 00.atn (free) B Filter FF-atn (free) |

item no. 16Make dark photo pop. This is a very simple technique to save images that are too dark. The procedure was used until today’s shadow/highlight replaced it. It still works well and a lot of folks still prefer it. More Light.atn (free) |

Selection by Ctrl+Click on the hidden top layer:
|
item no. 18Non-destructive Crop: Make a new layer, fill (e.g. gray), and lower the opacity. Use the "Nudge-Corners" to resize the layer, and move it around until you figure out where to crop it. When the crop is decided, TURN OFF the layer, and "SAVE as" psd file. The image to the left shows what happens when you Ctrl+Click the hidden layer. As you can see, the Ctrl+Click on the not-current and hidden layer simply made a selection. Do not use the Crop Tool, or adjust the "Canvas Size", but instead you simply say: "Image > Crop". Now export a JPG, or whatever, but don't save the PSD file that was already saved. That was a great tip, okay? So why use an Action for that? The answer is that I included dynamic lines in the layer (similar Centrepoint, item no. 2), and besides, this Action would also zoom out a bit, select the Nudge Tool, but YOU have to do both the Nudge, Hide, and then Save your PSD file :) Crop Here.atn (free) |

item no. 19This is a very simple technique to convert a color photo into Black & White. Tips: You can also convert a photo to Black & White using the keys: Ctrl+Shift+U, but with another result. BW.atn (Black & White) (free) |
| no pict |
item no. 20This is most likely the best B&W converter that exists in our universe. (written while I only knew about Adobe CS and other Elements... After LightZone by LightCraft, rating is now 2, instead of 5 and free instead of $22) Usage: Double Click the layer named "edit lightness", and chose which converted color you want to edit. Tips: Also for each color, the lightness slider can be used to remove image noise :) A user in the leading Photoshop Forum has now reported that really neat effects were revealed after playing with the Y layer blend modes. BW Converter.atn (Black & White) (free) |
Code Snip:![]() Run on right click:
|
item no. 21Example: Made a JPG file, and now you want to find the source file, (or vice versa). So you open the folder to look up the file, but where is it? :( Right Click the JPG file, say "Photo Match", and Explorer would open every match, one per folder and selected file :) Notice the screen-shot, (Code Snip:) Notepad: You should only replace Line no. 4, with another extension when you do not use CR2, but others such as NEF, JPG or whatever instead. In Line no. 6, you could change the value for psE to 3, 4 or 6 instead. psE isn't used of course, but this setting seems to put some intelligence into my program, intended but the
revelation will come to you after experiments with the other option. Tips: found near the Ignore button.(now just spec your version number). Change Line no. (8), 10 11 12 so it knows where to search. otherwise it will only search for a match on the path above your right clicked file. Double click the program file to install (or uninstall) the right click option. (probably not working in malware such as Vista by stupids (Microsoooft)) Tips: Since an "ignore" button pops up, it's recommended that you check the move mouse cursor to default button in your WinXP control/mouse settings, (always recommended anyway). The program will work better if you leave all the four digits written in filenames by your camera. |
